About The Event
Meet at 8:00 - 8:15 AM at
Tractor Supply; 40 Shippensburg Shopping Center; Shippensburg PA 17257. We
will depart at 8:30 AM
We will travel to Front Royal, VA via interstate. We will stop
at a Sheetz in Martinsburg VA for a bathroom break. Then we will travel to
Spelunker’s Restaurant (116 South St, Front Royal VA) for an early lunch at
11:00 AM.
Spelunker’s is an acclaimed restaurant that specializes in burgers made from
chuck steak and brisket that are mixed twice daily. Their hot dogs are all beef
and served on a New England style bun. They are also known for their chili and
frozen custard. They have been praised by the Washington Post, the Northern
Virginia Magazine and the Washingtonian Magazine named them on their list
of “Fantastic Foodie Getaways”.
After lunch we will enter Skyline Drive which is part of the National Park
Service. Bring your annual or lifetime National Park pass if you have one.
Otherwise the cost is $30 per vehicle payable by cash or credit.
Skyline Drive is 105 miles long with numerous lookouts along the way. We will
be stopping at many. There are lookouts on both sides of the mountain range.
Big Meadows Lodge/ Harry F Byrd Visitor Center is at MM51. We will be
stopping there to visit the visitor center and at the Lodge you may visit the New
Market Taproom for a specialty drink, beer or glass of local wine. You may also
want to try a hearty slice of Shenandoah’s Signature Blackberry Ice Cream Pie in
the Spottswood Dining Room. Depending on timing the Spottswood Dining is
open until 2:30 PM and the New Market Taproom opens at 2:30 PM. So we will
try to arrive by 2 PM so everyone can enjoy both places if they want.
Skyline Drive ends at Waynesboro VA. The total distance we will have traveled
at this point is 216 miles. At this point the cruise will end. You may elect to stay
overnight in the area or jump on the interstate and travel back home. The ride
home is approximately 2 hours and 44 minutes from Waynesboro VA.
